Infiniti i30 2001
I went to an Infiniti dealership and they said it would cost me about $4000 to fix it. (they did not even look at the car). I talked to my mechanic and he said i could put a universal converter on it that would cost probably less than 300$ to fix on it.
Is it smart to put the $300 one on it? What challenges should i forsee by going the universal converter route?

There is nothing wrong with using a universal converter. Your mechanic can weld it into place. If you live in California and have to take the California emissions test you will not pass it with a universal converter. If you can save yourself money go ahead. The only difference with a universal converter is that it has to be adapted to fit and it is a little less constrictive.
